Weapons for this Hunt

Any long range cartridge from .243 win up to any of the .30 caliber rifles will work great.

Hunting Season

The best time of year to hunt Texas Dall Sheep is from October through January. The sheep have grown out their heavy winter coats. This creates the thickest, most striking snow-white capes for mounting your trophy. The crisp fall and winter air in Oklahoma makes  hunting far more comfortable.

From June to August, the rams sport a much shorter, sleeker summer coat, which some hunters prefer.

February to May is not recommended. During this time, the sheep are naturally shedding their heavy winter coats, and they become patchy, ragged, and highly undesirable for taxidermy purposes.

Hunting Environment

From the fabulous lodge to the mild Oklahoma weather, hunting the Texas Dall Sheep will be a great experience. Unlike the extreme temperature swings found further north, Oklahoma’s hunting season offers comfortable, crisp mornings and temperate afternoons that allow you to stay in the field longer without battling the elements. On the occasional rainy day, you can hunt from the elevated blinds and have an enjoyable hunt staying nice and dry.

Average Temperatures in Oklahoma

  • Winter: Average highs of 40°F to 50°F and overnight lows in the 20°F to 30°F range

Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) in Oklahoma City is the closest major airport to the lodge, located just over an hour away. However, many of the hunters prefer to drive to the lodge. Driving allows you to easily transport your frozen meat, cape, and horns back to your home and your own taxidermist
