About the Bontebok

The bontebok is a visually striking antelope native only to the Fynbos and Renosterveld plains of South Africa’s Western Cape. Celebrated for its deep chestnut coat, bright white underbelly, and a distinct white blaze running down its face, this medium-sized grazer is a celebrated conservation success story.

The species is best known for its miraculous recovery from the brink of extinction. Heavily hunted by early Dutch settlers and severely impacted by agricultural encroachment, the bontebok population plummeted to just 17 individuals in the early 1930s. The creation of the Bontebok National Park in 1931 provided a sanctuary for the remaining herd. Today, thanks to strict protective measures and translocation programs, the population has rebounded to several thousand, though they remain entirely dependent on protected areas and private game farms.

Behaviorally, the bontebok is a highly territorial, diurnal grazer that prefers short grasses and open vegetation. They are surprisingly poor jumpers, which inadvertently saved the original herds from escaping into unprotected, hostile farmlands. Instead, they are highly agile at crawling under obstacles. Males establish small, year-round territories to attract breeding herds, while females and calves organize themselves into strict maternal groups.
