About the Gerenuk

General Information

The gerenuk (also known as the giraffe gazelle) is a slender, long-necked antelope found in the arid thornbush and semi-desert regions of East Africa. Native to countries like Kenya and Somalia, its name comes from the Somali word garanuug, which fittingly translates to “giraffe-necked”. With spindly, incredibly long legs and a tiny head, it looks like a delicate cross between a standard gazelle and a miniature giraffe.

One of the gerenuk’s most astonishing physical traits is its ability to extract all the moisture it needs directly from the plants it eats, meaning it can survive its entire life without taking a single sip of water. It is uniquely adapted for “vertical dining” in the dry savanna. Thanks to a specially adapted backbone and strong hind legs, a gerenuk can hoist itself completely upright onto its hind legs. This bipedal stance, combined with its exceptionally long neck and pointed upper lip, allows it to easily browse on the tender leaves, buds, and fruits of tall acacia trees that are completely out of reach to other grazers.

Because of their highly specialized foraging habits, gerenuks live in habitats where they don’t have to compete with many other species for ground vegetation. They typically roam in very small, single-sex groups or pairs, with adult males relying on scent glands located near their hooves and eyes to mark their territory. While their delicate, almost gangly appearance might look vulnerable, their large, highly perceptive ears and bulging eyes are excellent at detecting danger, allowing them to spot predators like leopards, lions, and cheetahs from a great distance.

  • Behavioral Adaptations
    • Bipedal Standing: The gerenuk has a specialized pelvic and spinal structure allowing it to stand completely upright on its two hind legs to reach leaves up to 8 feet off the ground.
