About the Caracal (lynx)

The Caracal is a slender, medium-sized wild cat renowned for its athletic prowess. Famous for its prominent black-tufted ears, the name “caracal” originates from the Turkish word karakulak, which translates to “black ear”. They inhabit a wide range of environments, including the savannas, woodlands, and semi-deserts of Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Often referred to as the “desert lynx” due to its similar ear tufts, the caracal is actually a unique species closely related to the serval. They are incredibly fast and agile hunters, recognized globally for their ability to leap up to 10 feet into the air to catch birds mid-flight. Their bodies are perfectly adapted for stealth; stiff fur on the soles of their paws allows them to stalk prey nearly silently across the arid ground.

Description of the Caracal

  • Size and Weight: Ranging from 33 to 48 inches in total length (including the tail), they stand 16 to 20 inches at the shoulder. Males generally weigh 25 to 40 lbs., while females are smaller, weighing 19 to 29 lbs.
  • Ears: Their signature feature is large, pointed ears that are completely black on the backside and controlled by about 20 muscles. Their ear fluffs are from 1.5 to 2 inches long.
  • Coat and Color: The short, dense fur is typically a uniform tawny-brown, sandy, or rich brick-red, though the underbelly, chin, and inner legs are much paler white. They do not have spots or stripes on their back, setting them apart from true lynx species.
  • Facial Markings: The face has distinct dark lines running from the forehead to the nose, contrasting white patches around the eyes and mouth, and dark lines over the eyes.

Suitable Weapons

The ideal caliber to hunt a caracal is a small-to-medium centerfire rifle, such as the .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, or .243 Winchester.

A 12 gauge shotgun is a good option when shooting a caracal that is treed when hunting with hounds.
