Weapons for this Hunt
A mature Wildebeest bull possesses a legendary, bad-tempered determination that demands heavy-caliber respect and absolute shot precision. Any long range cartridge from 6.5mm up to any of the .30 caliber rifles will work great.
Hunting Season
Late autumn and winter, October through February, offer the absolute best conditions for a North American wildebeest safari. Oklahoma summers are brutally hot, but late fall and winter bring crisp, cold days. Wildebeests are large, heavily muscled animals weighing up to 600 pounds; cooler weather forces them to stay active and feed during daylight hours rather than bedding down in thick brush to escape the heat.
Spring in Oklahoma, March through May, is also a good time to hunt the Wildebeest with a little warmer temperatures. Spot-and-stalk hunting works well during this timeframe.
Hunting Environment
From the fabulous lodge to the mild Oklahoma weather, hunting the Wildebeest will be a great experience. Unlike the extreme temperature swings found further north, Oklahoma’s hunting season offers comfortable, crisp mornings and temperate afternoons that allow you to stay in the field longer without battling the elements. On the occasional rainy day, you can hunt from the elevated blinds and have an enjoyable hunt staying nice and dry.
Average Temperatures in Oklahoma

- Fall: Highs cooling from 80°F in early Fall down to 60°F; lows dropping into the 40°F range
- Winter: Average highs of 40°F to 50°F and overnight lows in the 20°F to 30°F range
