About the Scimitar Oryx

Scimitar oryx hunting is a highly sought-after, unique experience primarily centered on private ranches in Texas, Oklahoma, and South Africa. Highly prized for their majestic, swept-back horns and exceptionally delicious meat, these striking antelopes can weigh up to 460 pounds and feature horns exceeding 40 inches. Because they are adapted to arid, rugged environments, pursuing them often requires a challenging blend of patience and stamina.

Common pursuit methods include observing the landscape from high vantage points or moving through open terrain to locate these animals in their preferred habitats. Due to the physical resilience of the species, emphasis is typically placed on precision and the use of equipment suitable for large game to ensure efficiency. As scimitar oryx do not shed their horns, they are a great species to hunt throughout the year (normal North America off-seasons).

The scimitar-horned oryx is a striking desert antelope native to the Sahel region of North Africa. Famous for its impressive, backwards-curving horns that resemble ancient “scimitar” swords, it is a highly specialized herbivore built to survive extreme heat and prolonged droughts.

The management of these animals on private lands is closely linked to significant conservation efforts. Native to North Africa, the species was declared extinct in the wild in 2000 due to habitat loss and overhunting. However, breeding programs on ranches in the American Southwest and other regions have allowed populations to thrive. These programs often provide the financial support and biological stock necessary for reintroduction projects within their original native ranges.

Hunting Area

Southern Texas and parts of New Mexico have free-range Scimitar Oryx hunting.  However most oryx hunts take place on large high-fence ranches in Texas and Oklahoma.
