About the Vaal (grey) Rhebok
The Vaal Rhebok, also commonly known as the grey rhebok, is a medium-sized antelope native to Southern Africa, predominantly found in the high-altitude, rocky grasslands and mountainous regions of South Africa. Known for its elusiveness and keen eyesight, this elegant species is often referred to as a “phantom of the mountains”.
Physically, the Vaal Rhebok is distinguished by its dense, woolly, grey-brown coat that provides perfect camouflage against the rocky terrain. It features a slender neck, long, narrow ears, and a uniquely enlarged, black rubbery nose. The species displays sexual dimorphism: while the females remain hornless, the males carry striking, slender, and strictly upright horns that rise vertically from their foreheads. These unique features distinguish them from similar species like the mountain reedbuck.
Behaviorally, these antelopes are highly adaptable and territorial. They typically gather in small, closed family herds consisting of one dominant ram and a few females with their young, though solitary males are also common. The vaal rhebok is an accomplished jumper and uses a characteristic “rocking horse” gait when fleeing danger, which is further flagged by the brilliant white underside of its tail.
